  1. The following is a letter from Don Ware and Charles Flannigan
  2. concerning a recent article in the Pensacola News Journal
  3. dealing with the Ed Walters UFO photographs.  The letter was
  4. sent to both the Pensacola News Journal and the Gulf Breeze
  5. Sentinel.

  10. Dear Editor,
  11.  
  12.    As the primary investigators of the famous Gulf Breeze UFO
  13. case now involving over 70 photographs, Charles Flannigan
  14. and I feel we must comment on the "road shot."  This photo,
  15. #19, has received doubtful comment in newspapers and TV
  16. recently.  One investigator said that the reflection on the road
  17. doesn't form a round spot, so the photo most be a double
  18. exposure.  A careful look at the surface of Shoreline Drive,
  19. 191B where the UFO hovered, will help explain the reflection
  20. resulting from the large bright light source on the bottom of
  21. the UFO.

  23.    Looking down on the surface, you can see that about 30% is
  24. mostly white with some tan rock.  This rock has a hard smooth
  25. surface.  It is embedded in comparatively soft dark asphalt,
  26. and the light colored rocks have become oriented with mostly
  27. flat surfaces up.  Over time, some asphalt has worn away 1 to
  28. 2 millimeters below the hard rock surfaces.  A series of photos
  29. taken with a 100,000 candlepower light shining at various
  30. angles on the road shows enhanced reflectivity at shallow
  31. angles.  This seems to be the result of spectral reflection from
  32. the light colored rocks.  Because the asphalt is worn down
  33. below the surface of the rock, only the rock is visible when
  34. looking farther down the road.  This causes more photons to
  35. reach the camera than you would normally expect from
  36. light reflected at a small angle.  Now the shape of the
  37. reflection from the UFO becomes easier to understand.

  39.    For those who still have doubts about the authenticity
  40. of this photo, you might look carefully at two photos in a
  41. copy of THE GULF BREEZE SIGHTINGS.  Turn to page 129 and
  42. look at the daylight photo of the road.  Compare the brightness
  43. of the double-yellow line between the hood and windshield
  44. wiper with the brightness near the spot where the UFO hovered.
  45. Now look one page back at photo #19 and make the same
  46. comparison. (Good light is helpful here.) The double-yellow
  47. line appears brighter near the UFO.  This tells us that light
  48. from the UFO is reflecting off the line; hence, NO DOUBLE
  49. EXPOSURE (emphasis theirs).

  51.    We have had the good fortune of getting to know Ed and
  52. Frances Walters well since our extensive investigation of the
  53. many Gulf Breeze UFO encounters of 1987 and '88.  They are
  54. two of the most considerate, hard-working, and lovable people
  55. we know.  They have shown great courage and composure
  56. under public attack by several UFO debunkers.  We wish them
  57. the best of luck in all of their endeavors, whether it is a $1-a-
  58. year job or the sale of a mind-broadening book.
